Description

Raventós-Codorniu is the oldest winegrowing business in Spain, with more than 460 years of history dedicated to creating wines and cavas of great value. It is the largest vineyard in Europe, with more than 3,000 ha. The group have sales presence in more than 50 countries. The group applies sustainable agricultural techniques, minimizing the use of chemical products and watches out for the natural ecosystems and water resources. The group broadened out their care for the environment to the entire value chain, reducing for example the weight of bottles and, as a result, the impact of the carbon footprint. The Codorniu facilities studied for PRIMA are located in the Penedès region, which has the most wine tradition, surface and production in Catalonia. Its terroirs form privileged landscapes for cultivating the vineyard due to climate, orography and soil differences, from the sea level to more than 800 m. height.

Expected Impacts

  • Reduction of diffuse pollution from agriculture (nitrates)
  • Use of waste by-products from agriculture with winery wastewater treatment and reuse

Environmental, Social & Economic benefits

Demo site in Codorniu (Big facilities):

  • > 1100 m3/year winery wastewater treated and reused in vineyards
  • 70-90% removal of pollutants (SS, TN, NO3- , Cu, chlorpyrifos and metalaxyl)
  • 26 Tn cork reused per year.

Demo site in Codorniu (Small facilities):

  • Similar conditions to bigger Codorniu headquarters are expected.
  • >500m3/year winery wastewater treated and reused

Demo site in Torre Marimon

  • The treatment wetland achieved 98% nitrate removal with a 40-50 mg/L influent. This demo is settled to check the removal efficiency with a well polluted with 250-400 mg/L of nitrate.
  • Stakeholders engagement
