UNESCO and PwC Lead AI Sustainability Masterclass at Web Summit Qatar 2025
Doha, Qatar – February 23, 2025 — At the Web Summit Qatar 2025, held from February 23 to 26, a standout event was the UNESCO-PwC Masterclass titled “Balancing AI Climate Innovation and Sustainability.” This session brought together global experts to explore the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in addressing challenges within the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus.
The masterclass featured keynote speakers Leona Verdadero from UNESCO Paris, Prof. Mohamed Essaaidi of Mohammed V University in Morocco, and Dr. Jordi Morató from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Dr. Mohamed Alaoui from UNESCO introduced the session, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in developing effective solutions for sustainable development.
Leona Verdadero presented UNESCO’s latest report, “Generative AI and the Environment,” which examines the intersection of AI and environmental sustainability. The report highlights AI’s potential to enhance climate modeling, optimize energy consumption, and improve environmental monitoring, while also addressing concerns about energy demands, ethical implications, and the need for regulatory frameworks.
Prof. Mohamed Essaaidi discussed the role of AI in advancing sustainable practices within the WEFE Nexus, focusing on regional challenges and opportunities in the MENA region. Dr. Jordi Morató shared insights from the SureNexus project, demonstrating how AI tools can support decision-making processes in resource management and resilience building.
The masterclass underscored the critical role of AI in driving sustainable innovation and the importance of collaborative efforts between international organizations, academia, and industry. The session contributed to the broader discourse on leveraging technology for environmental resilience and sustainable development.
