Nature-Based Water Management and the WEFE Nexus: SureNexus Event at NTUA
On July 8th, 2025, the Sanitary Engineering Laboratory (SEL) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) hosted the hybrid event “Nature-Based Water Management Systems and their Link to the WEFE Nexus: The SureNexus Project”, in the context of the SureNexus initiative, which is approaching its conclusion under the PRIMA Partnership.
With over 40 stakeholders from academia, industry, and SMEs participating both on-site at the NTUA campus and online, the event created a dynamic platform for discussing how Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) can contribute to sustainable and climate-resilient development, particularly within the Greek and Mediterranean context.
The event opened with welcome remarks by Professor Constantinos Noutsopoulos on behalf of SEL NTUA. This was followed by a presentation of the overall SureNexus project by Alexandra Tsatsou, highlighting its goals, methodologies, and major outcomes to date.
Next, Andriani Galani explored the potential of Natural Water Treatment systems in connection with the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus, emphasizing the importance of integrated resource management. Nicolas Bedau presented a case study on sustainable ecotourism in Tinos, while Dimitris Michailaris showcased an innovative desalination approach implemented in Agios Fokas, tackling water scarcity through environmentally conscious technologies.
An engaging roundtable discussion followed, moderated by Andriani Galani, featuring insightful contributions from:
-
Elisa Nika (Imperial College London)
-
Theocharis Nazos (NTUA)
-
George Gourgouletis (Metrolab)
-
Ioannis Vasilakos (HYDRASPIS)
The panel emphasized the need to bridge research and implementation, highlighting policy, investment, and cross-sectoral collaboration as key enablers for Nature-Based Solutions.
Participants were invited to register on the SureNexus Stakeholder Platform, ensuring continued dialogue and cooperation even beyond the project’s duration.
As the SureNexus project enters its final phase, the consortium remains committed to disseminating its results and supporting the mainstreaming of Nature-Based Solutions in Mediterranean communities.
