Exploring the WEFE Nexus: SureNexus Consortium Visits the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
During the second presidential meeting in Athens (23-25 October 2024) the SureNexus project consortium recently visited the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in the context of a technical site visit. This innovative site exemplifies the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus, demonstrating how integrated approaches can lead to sustainable resource management and resilience.
The SNFCC is a dynamic public space offering free access to a range of cultural, educational, and recreational activities. It hosts the Greek National Opera, the National Library of Greece, and the Stavros Niarchos Park—a 21-hectare green space in Athens. Built through a generous grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and now managed by SNFCC Single Member S.A., the Center is operated under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of Finance.
SNFCC’s design embodies WEFE Nexus principles, integrating water, energy, and food systems to enhance sustainability. Rainwater harvesting supports park irrigation, and energy-efficient systems power its operations, showcasing effective resource interconnectivity.
During the visit, consortium members engaged with SNFCC experts to gain insights into the center’s sustainability practices. This experience offered valuable lessons for addressing climate change, resource scarcity, and food security challenges within the SureNexus project.
