Nature-Based Water Management and the WEFE Nexus: SureNexus Event at NTUA
Athens, July 2025 – As part of the SureNexus initiative under the PRIMA programme, the Sanitary Engineering Laboratory (SEL) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is preparing to host a high-level hybrid event entitled “Nature-Based Water Management Systems and their Link to the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus.” The workshop, scheduled for July 8th, 2025, aims to bring together experts and stakeholders from academia, industry, and innovative SMEs to explore the role of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in advancing sustainable and climate-resilient development, particularly in the Greek and Mediterranean context.
The agenda includes welcome remarks by Professor Constantinos Noutsopoulos and a presentation of the SureNexus project by Alexandra Tsatsou. Presentations will follow from Andriani Galani on the potential of natural water treatment systems within the WEFE Nexus, Nicolas Bedau on sustainable ecotourism practices in Tinos, and Dimitris Michailaris on environmentally friendly desalination efforts in Agios Fokas.
A roundtable discussion, moderated by Andriani Galani, will feature contributions from Elisa Nika (Imperial College London), Theocharis Nazos (NTUA), George Gourgouletis (Metrolab), and Ioannis Vasilakos (HYDRASPIS). This session will focus on bridging research with real-world implementation, emphasizing policy, investment, and cross-sectoral collaboration as enablers for NBS.
Participants will be invited to join the SureNexus Stakeholder Platform to support continued exchange beyond the life of the project. As SureNexus approaches its final phase, the project remains committed to knowledge sharing and the mainstreaming of NBS across Mediterranean communities.
