Empowering Postgraduate Students through the SureNexus Project at NTUA
As part of the European project SureNexus, an inspiring educational presentation was recently delivered by Andriani Galani to postgraduate students, focusing on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) – approaches that utilize natural processes to address social, environmental, and economic challenges.
The presentation took place on May 29th at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and was part of SureNexus’s broader efforts to educate and empower the next generation of scientists and professionals, promoting the integration of sustainable practices into natural resource management.
SureNexus (NEXUS-oriented sustainable implementation of climate-resilient Water-Energy-Food systems) aims to foster innovative, sustainable, and resilient solutions for the management of Water-Energy-Food (WEF) systems, with a strong emphasis on Mediterranean countries that are increasingly affected by climate change pressures.
Andriani Galani’s presentation provided students with an overview of NbS principles and applications, featuring examples from SureNexus pilot sites. Key topics included:
-
Ecological restoration and watershed management,
-
Natural wastewater treatment solutions, such as constructed wetlands,
-
The multi-functionality of NbS, offering environmental, social, and economic benefits,
-
The importance of participatory approaches and the empowerment of local communities.
