Exploring the Future of Agriculture in the Mediterranean Amid Global Changes
Barcelona, Spain – In collaboration with IRTA, the UNESCO Chair on Sustainability of the UPC, CREDA, and the Catalonian Cork Institute Foundation, a one-day workshop was held to delve into the future of agriculture in the Mediterranean region affected by global changes.
The workshop, focused on the Quadruple Nexus or NEXUS WEFE approach (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems), extensively analyzed the potential of tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), circular economy principles (CE), and bioeconomics, along with nature-based solutions (NBS). The discussion centered on addressing the challenges posed by climate change and fostering sustainability.
Practices and solutions were presented during the workshop to support a resilient future for agriculture in Catalonia, with particular emphasis on the viticulture sector, olive and fruit tree cultivation, and the horticultural industry.
This event was organized within the framework of the Foundation Prima’s “SureNexus” project. The project aims to ensure a just transition of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus for adaptation to climate change and sustainable development. It particularly focuses on nature-based solutions and bioeconomics. The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and explore strategies for the future of agriculture in the region.
