SureNexus at the Advanced Course on WEFE Nexus approach in Mediterranean irrigated agriculture
The recently concluded Advanced Course on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus Approach in Mediterranean Irrigated Agriculture has marked a significant milestone in promoting sustainable practices in the region. Organized by PRIMA (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area), the course aimed to enhance understanding and application of the WEFE Nexus framework in addressing challenges related to water, energy, and food security in Mediterranean irrigated agriculture.
SureNexus represented by Simos Malamis (NTUA)
SureNexus contributed substantially to the program’s success. Simos Malamis, Associate Professor at the National Technical University of Athens and a key expert in the SureNexus project, delivered two very interesting lectures. The first session delved into the practical implementation of the WEFE Nexus in decentralized wastewater management, shedding light on innovative approaches to enhance water efficiency and sustainability.
The second lecture focused on the pivotal role of the Nexus Approach in supporting small agro-ecotouristic facilities. Prof. Malamis shared insights and strategies aimed at promoting the harmonious integration of agriculture and ecotourism, fostering a balanced and sustainable approach to regional development.
Participant Feedback Highlights Course’s Success
The course received positive feedback from participants who expressed appreciation for its comprehensive coverage of the WEFE Nexus Approach. Attendees praised the practical insights, emphasizing the relevance of the topics covered to real-world challenges faced in Mediterranean irrigated agriculture.
Next Steps in WEFE Nexus Implementation
As the participants disperse with newfound knowledge and strategies, the hope is that the WEFE Nexus Approach will be actively implemented across various agricultural practices in the Mediterranean region. The principles discussed during the course are anticipated to contribute significantly to the region’s sustainability goals and address the interconnected challenges of water, energy, and food security.
PRIMA and SureNexus look forward to continued collaboration in advancing research and innovation for a more sustainable and resilient future in the Mediterranean agricultural landscape.
